CELLULAR JAIL
Overview
The Cellular Jail, also known as KALA PANI (Hindi for black waters), was a colonial prison in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. The prison was used by the British especially to exile political prisoners to the remote archipelago. Many notable independence activists such as Batukeshwar Dutt, Yogendra Shukla among others and the famous Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, were imprisoned here during the struggle for India’s independence. Today, the complex serves as a national memorial monument. Although the prison complex itself was constructed between 1896 and 1906, the British had been using the Andaman Islands as a prison since the days in the immediate aftermath of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. The construction of the prison started in 1896 and was completed in 1906
- The eminent and legendary Cellular jail was built by the British over a period of 10 years at Port Blair.
- There were 696 cells in this 3-floor and 7 branch prison.
- The size of a cell was 4.5 meters to 2.7 meters.
- About 20,000 cubic feet of local stones and 30,00,000 bricks made by the prisoners were used for the construction of Kalapani jail.
- The building had seven wings and a tower at the centre which was used by guards to keep watch on the inmate.
- There is also a museum where the weapons can be seen from which
the freedom fighters were tortured.
